Project Description
Lowell’s urban development is tied to its canals. These canals powered Lowell’s ubiquitous factories but they also created a now-defunct public walkway along their edges, the first greenway system. Our proposal rethinks Lowell’s greenway system, and makes it the starting point of a larger urban plan. By raising the building mass and bridging across the canals, the connective nature of the greenway is maintained while proposing new modes of community interaction with its public space. Rather than linear parks lining the canals, bridging across the canal creates permeable courtyards cared for by its onlooking inhabitants, while maintaining the connections created by the canal system.
