Project Description
Eriksberg is a mixed-use district on the northern bank of the Gota Alv river in Gothenburg, situated across the river from its historic urban core. Its development began after the decline of the former ship building industry. At first glance, urban morphology of the current development mimics the historic urban fabric. However, the site’s narrow profile, the subdivi¬sion of land into large parcels, and the prioritization of the waterfront as an amenity, distinguish it from this archetype.
At a district scale, comparing similar developments in Hamburg and Malmö with Eriksberg, we observe that in Malmö, the scale of the waterfront caters to the whole city beyond the immediate neighborhood with multiple conditions informing the visual structures in this development. In Hamburg, the views are more internalized with the Elbphilharmonie making up the skyline. In Gothenburg, the development looks towards the skyline of the historic city across the river.
At the scale of the individual urban block, there is somewhat of a resemblance between beach-resort architecture of Miami and the residential blocks of Eriksberg where the latter formally and diagrammatically appears to resemble the resort hotels of Miami, Florida.
