Project Description
The enigmatic image of Yale’s campus heavily relies in the hierarchical composition of Cross Campus. Located in the heart of the university, Cross Campus consists of an urban axis flanked by traditional Yale Colleges and terminated by the presence of Sterling Memorial Library. While only located a block away from the New Haven Green, the planning of cross campus makes no reference to the larger urbanistic condition of the city. Our scheme proposes the creation of a new axis, originating from the Green and crossing Cross Campus. In doing so, the project establishes a new hierarchy that both questions and explores the set of relationships at play in the site. By disrupting its otherwise stable nature and imposing a new organization, the inherent qualities become reinforced and thus revealed.
