‘Engaging the Edge’ utilizes these two modular systems working in tandem with one another, anticipating the continuation of the Sponge Park and enhancing the system with the addition of easily fabricated affordable housing units above. Through a series of precedent studies, I began investigating in an effort to understand existing relationships between architecture and bodies of water. Through this investigation and the creation of three standard unit types, I conducted a series of site investigations that exposed the potential and limitations of the given site and the relationships between the units themselves. The final proposal provides housing for 45+ people with dwellings that seemingly float above the Sponge Park as its vegetation continuously cleans the water through natural biological processes. Each dwelling unit has access to private or semi-private exterior space, allowing the interior program to expand outside the footprint of the enclosed unit. This allows for the facilitation of community engagement between individuals and between the individual and their environment.
