Stella Betts

Stella Betts is a founding partner at LEVENBETTS, an award winning New York City-based architecture practice. The practice focuses on design at a range of scales including urban design, public architecture, houses and housing, commercial workspaces, exhibitions and furniture.

LEVENBETTS work has been recognized nationally and internationally through awards, exhibitions and publications. Recently the firm was awarded the AIA New York State Firm of the Year. In addition, in 2020, Stella was recognized by Architectural Record’s Women in Architecture as the Next Generation Leader. The office has won eleven New York City AIA awards and is currently working on its fifth New York City public library, a 300,000 square foot Life Sciences Laboratory Building in Harlem, the partial renovation to the Queens Museum, a museum exhibition at the Crystal Bridges Museum for a house prototype and a series of pavilions and residential projects.

LEVENBETTS has been published widely most notably in a monograph on the first ten years of the firm’s practice, called Pattern Recognition. This coming fall of 2021, a book that locates thirteen of the firm’s residential projects within the current discourse on the architecture of the house called Thirteen Ways of Looking at a House will be published by ORO Editions.

Stella has previously taught at both the undergraduate and the graduate levels at Cornell University School of Art Architecture and Planning, Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, Parsons The New School for Design, Cooper Union and Syracuse University School of Architecture. Stella received a Bachelor of Arts from Connecticut College and a Master of Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Stella serves on the Board of Directors of the New York Architectural League.
