Assistant Professor

Joyce Hsiang is a founding partner of Plan B Architecture & Urbanism. Her research and design work applies architectural methods and cartographic analysis to explore new relationships between humans and the earth and examine the agency of design at the planetary scale. Award-winning design and research projects range in scale from installations and buildings to landscapes, urban plans and global models of urbanization.

The work of Plan B Architecture & Urbanism has been exhibited in biennials and galleries worldwide including the Venice Architecture Biennial, the Istanbul Biennial, the Hong Kong Shenzhen Biennale, the Chengdu Architecture Biennale, the Eye on Earth Summit in Abu Dhabi, UAE and the forthcoming Lisbon Triennale. Exhibitions at architecture schools across the US include large-scale solo shows at the University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture Gallery and the Yale Architecture Gallery.

Hsiang is the recipient of numerous prizes and grants for her design research including the AIA Latrobe Prize, a Graham Foundation Grant, Hines Research Grant for Advanced Sustainability, AIA Upjohn Research Grant, MacMillan Center Grant, and funding from the Franke Program in Science and Humanities. Award-winning design projects include the inaugural J. Irwin & Xenia S. Miller Prize and the Modern Atlanta Prize. Her work on urban development, the impact of population growth, resource consumption, climate change and design at the scale of the world has been featured in diverse forums including the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) radio program Future Tense, Atlantic Cities, Bracket, New Geographies, LA Forum and the Copenhagen Urban Futures Forum.

Prior to starting Plan B, Hsiang was a project architect and manager at the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) in Rotterdam and Pelli Clarke Pelli in New Haven, where she led and managed the design and construction of large-scale urban projects throughout the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Hsiang received a B.A. from Yale College and an M.Arch. from Yale School of Architecture.
