Akihisa Hirata

Norman R. Foster Visiting Professor of Architectural Design

Born in Osaka in 1971. Completed MA from Kyoto University in 1997. Received MA from the Graduate School of Engineering and Faculty of Engineering, Kyoto University in 1997. After working for Toyo Ito & Associates, Architects, established his own office, Akihisa Hirata Architecture Office in 2005. Professor at Kyoto University since 2015.

Major works including Hontoka. Ojiya City, Co-creation Hub for People, Town, and Culture (2024), Tokyu Plaza Harajuku “Harakado” facade/roofscape design (2024), Center of Yatsushiro Folk Performing Arts (2021), Tree-ness House (2017), ART MUSEUM & LIBRARY, OTA (2017), Bloomberg Pavilion (2011), sarugaku (2008). Major publications including Architecture Arises at the Water’s Edge for Humans (Seignsha, 2024), Discovering New (TOTO Publishing, 2018) and JA108 Akihisa HIRATA 2017→2003 (Shinkenchiku-sha Co., Ltd., 2017). Received awards including The Murano Togo Prize (2018), BCS Prize (2018), LANXESS Colored Concrete Award (2015), 13th Golden Lion for Best National Participation in the 13th International Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale (2012), Elita Design Award , 19th JIA Newcomer Award (2008).

Solo exhibitions including Architecture Arises at the Water’s Edge for Humans (Nerima Art Museum,2024), Tangling (The Architecture Foundation, London, UK, 2012 / Belgium, 2013), joined A Japanese Constellation: Toyo Ito, SANAA, and Beyond (MoMA, 2016), Milan Design Week and Art Basel.
