Lindsey Wikstrom
Lindsey Wikstrom is the Founding Principal of Mattaforma, an architectural design and research practice. In 2022, Wikstrom was invited to speak at Prada’s Possible Conversation series where she launched her book Designing the Forest and Other Mass Timber Futures (2023), published by Routledge, with foreword by Kenneth Frampton. Since then, she has lectured around the country on the topic of the urgency of biodiverse mass timber, forest stewardship models, and the agency of architects in fighting climate change.
Her research on renewable and reclaimed materials has been published in Embodied Energy and Design, Faktur, Cite, e-flux, Urban Omnibus, and exhibited at the XXII Triennale do Milano: Broken Nature. Wikstrom has also organized and moderated Material Worlds, a speaker series hosted by MoMA’s Emilio Ambasz Institute, an online discussion series that gathers together experts and scholars who transcend the typical boundaries of expertise to posit new viewpoints on the equitable and resilient sourcing of building materials, not only to envision the future, but also to better understand the past and present of humanity’s impact on the nonhuman world.
Wikstrom’s practice Mattaforma, has been most recently featured in Madame Architect, AN Interior, Architects Newspaper, and named Young Architects of 2023 by Cultured Magazine. Their work includes industrial, educational, residential, commercial, and hospitality projects that take a critical approach towards health and design ethics by engaging materials that improve occupant health and the health of those involved in the entire supply chain, including timber, earth, and many more.
She holds an M.Arch from Columbia University, where she was awarded the Charles McKim Prize, Visualization Award, and Avery 6 Award. Wikstrom is also a recipient of the SOM Prize. She has taught at Columbia GSAPP, Cornell AAP, and Syracuse University.
