We focus on the “soft” and “hard” architectures of museums, archives and other venues devoted to the exploration and presentation of material cultures. Inspired by ANT, actor-network-theory, we explore the multiplicity of parties and forces that mobilize venues, buildings and displays as diverse as national galleries, ancient remains and pop-up festivals. We characterize the “soft” parties/forces as “~tors”—say, fabrica~tors, collect~tors, conserva~tors, cura~tors, direc~tors, educa~tors, narra~tors, audi~tors, jani~tors, construc~tors, visi~tors, agita~tors and so on—and the “hard” parties/forces as such physical potentials, resources, technologies, infra~structures, super~structures, artifacts, ephemera and so on that inspire our “~tors.” This year, our explorations of the soft/hard architectures of material culture venues are focused on the impact of a new “~tor” that we propose, the situa~tor—one that constructs settings that register and illuminate phenomena/artifacts as things engaged with their worlds, rather than detached from them.
