The design of a building implicitly accounts for its lifespan, as a structure is expected to remain in sound condition for an anticipated number of years. Yet these predictions prove irrelevant when a building falls out of use and is demolished prematurely. Today, as we strive to limit our carbon emissions and curb global warming, we come to value the material existence of a building as a distinct advantage, given that new construction materials accounts for 23 percent of process-related global carbon emissions. Contrary to the tendency to eliminate buildings prematurely, could we in fact allow them to endure indefinitely? Using drawings as research record, the course studies a regional building in detail to develop proposals for its continued use.
