In the context of the opacity of disciplinary knowledge today and the proliferation of ‘black box’ processes enabled by machine learning, this course will speculate on the impending effects of artificial intelligence on architectural design. We will sketch the history of attempts to incorporate algorithms, automatic methods, and other agents into the design process as a critical foil or innovative spark. The imminent incorporation of AI into architectural design can be viewed as the culmination of this trajectory, rendering design an exquisite corpse workflow made up of multiple agents and methods. The course will explore how design can incorporate processes that we can’t predict or fully understand, the novel types of intuition and skill needed, and the role of the contemporary designer through equal parts theoretical discussion and AI-based experimentation.
