The 2022 Jim Vlock First Year Building Project, designed and built by first-year Master of Architecture students, is located at 164 Plymouth Street in New Haven’s Hill neighborhood. The home was constructed as a 450 SF Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) in the rear yard of the 2019 Project. For the sixth consecutive year, the school has partnered with Columbus House, a non-profit provider of shelter, housing, and social services for the recently homeless in New Haven, to build dignified housing for those in need. In addition, this year’s home will serve as a pilot project for the City of New Haven as they consider new design guidelines for the creation of ADUs.
This year, we also celebrate the life and memory of Paul Brouard M.Arch 1959 (1929-2022) who led the the First Year Building Project (known as the Jim Vlock First Year Building Project since 2008) for 40 years. The event will feature remarks from Paul’s former students and colleagues.
